Ladies Weekend Out in Red Rock, NV: Learning, Leading, and Crushing It

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of guiding an all-women’s “Ladies Weekend Out” event in Red Rock, Nevada, with Golden State Guiding. It was an incredible experience, watching everyone push their limits, develop their skills, and connect over a shared love of climbing in such a beautiful setting. Here’s a glimpse into what made this weekend so memorable for me as a guide, and for all the strong women who joined.

Starting with Single Pitch Skills

Our weekend kicked off with a focus on single-pitch climbing. This was a perfect way to warm up, get into the flow, and make sure everyone felt comfortable with the basics before advancing. We worked on lead climbing, covering the fundamentals of clipping techniques, efficient movement, and staying composed while on lead. I shared my on-site process, taking the group through my step-by-step approach to reading a route, planning clipping stances, and staying calm and confident on the wall.

Learning to Clean Anchors

One of the highlights of the weekend was teaching the clients how to clean anchors. For many, this is a key skill for transitioning from indoor or guided climbing to more independent outdoor adventures. Step by step, I demonstrated everything from setting up the PAS (personal anchor system), to threading the anchor (rap rings) to making sure each component was set up for safety. We also discussed clipping the mussy hooks when those are available. It was inspiring to see each person take these new skills in stride, gain confidence, and execute with precision. Practicing these techniques on single-pitch climbs gave everyone a solid foundation before moving on to the bigger, multi-pitch routes.

Lead Climbing on Crimson Chrysalis

The weekend wasn’t just about single-pitch routes. We also got a chance to climb Crimson Chrysalis, one of Red Rock’s classic multi-pitch climbs. One client, eager and prepared, followed my lead up 9 pitches. Watching her tackle this route with determination and strength was a highlight for me. Crimson Chrysalis is not only physically demanding but also offers a mental challenge. Seeing her focus and confidence grow as she navigated the route, cleaned the gear, and moved up each pitch was a true testament to the work she has put into her craft.

The Value of Community and Support

Throughout the weekend, what stood out the most was the support and camaraderie within the group. It’s one thing to climb with others, but it’s another to have a group of women lifting each other up, cheering on each attempt, and celebrating every achievement. There’s a unique energy that comes from being in a group where everyone shares the same drive to improve, learn, and push themselves, and this weekend was a testament to that power.

Wrapping Up

At the end of the weekend, each person walked away with new skills, greater confidence, and the drive to keep climbing. For me, there’s nothing better than guiding women who are excited to learn, support each other, and embrace the full experience of climbing outdoors. It was a privilege to be part of their journey and help them take on these new challenges.

If you’re ready to level up your climbing, learn new skills, and experience some of Red Rock’s best routes, keep an eye out for future events with Golden State Guiding!

Ten Lakes Backpacking Trip

Welcome to the High Country of Tuolumne, located east of Yosemite Valley, within the park's boundary.

At the end of June 2024, our Ladies Weekend Out guide team embarked on a weekend of exploration in the Ten Lakes Basin, a backpacking trip designed to foster camaraderie and inspire future programs. This adventure was filled with self-discovery, deep laughter, and a team of experienced female guides dedicated to creating a supportive and inspiring environment for each other and those we bring into the backcountry.

We had lots of fun our first morning making pancakes thanks to Happy Grub!!

The Ten Lakes Basin, with its pristine alpine lakes, towering granite peaks, and lush meadows, served as the perfect backdrop for our journey. Over the weekend, we hiked through breathtaking landscapes, set up camp under the stars, and bonded over shared experiences and stories around the camp and on our day hikes.

Learning skills and efficiency tips from other experienced outdoor leaders is invaluable, especially when they showcase their passions in the activities they love. Being in the field with Emma, Becky and Rachel provided deep insights into the area's natural history, taught me essential backpacking skills (we are always learning and growing), and inspired the whole team through shared experiences and innovative ideas for how our programs can make a lasting impact through educational initiatives.

This trip was more than just a hike; it was an opportunity for personal growth and empowerment. We left with renewed inspiration and excitement to bring our ideas to fruition, and I am thrilled to share our plans for the year ahead. The Ladies Weekend Out program continues to inspire and empower women to explore the great outdoors and discover their own potential.

Shout out to our Partners Nemo and Rab for providing amazing backpacks to help get our gear out into the wilderness, and camp set ups to keep us cozy into the evenings.

Ladies Weekend Out Splitboarding Mammoth Lakes '24

We started off our March events with our Ladies Weekend Out Splitboarding Weekend Out! It’s been an interesting month due to the weather and despite the high winds, (which caused the anticipated snow accumulation to fall below expectations) the conditions provided valuable learning experiences for everyone involved.

We began our weekend by convening at a cozy Airbnb nestled at the base of Mammoth Mountain, adjacent to Canyon Lodge. Hosting events that allow us to reconvene at a central meeting place fosters deeper bonds and the formation of lasting friendships. As we gathered, everyone brought snacks to share while our guide team distributed Tera Kaia Basewear, all of the Weston boards and Rab demo equipment, our Lead Guides, Tailer and Sammy, outlined the itinerary for our upcoming adventures and set expectations for our outings.

On our first day, we ventured to Mammoth Rock, where Sammy touched base on the know before you hit the trail skills from beacon checks to applying skins to the splitboards and general flow movement when one starts to hit the trail. As we approached Mammoth Rock, we entered Tailer’s Tips, Turns and Tricks workshop where we dove into more technical movement while navigating the upward motions on a splitboard. After a productive morning honing our skills, we ascended to the summit of Panorama Dome to put our newfound knowledge to the test.

Navigating transitions from ascent to descent in 30 mph winds underscored the importance of securing gear and ensuring nothing was lost or misplaced in the blustery conditions.

Day 2 we saw an increasing wind forecast which pushed our decision in returning to the same trailhead with the goal of lapping Panorama Dome reinforcing our skills through repetition. Witnessing the increasing confidence among the team through the mutual support and assistance demonstrated among riders highlighted the progression of each individual toward solidifying their foundational skill set as splitboarders. With each run, participants refined their turns, executed precise kick turns and AVA turns, while their smiles grew ever wider.

These events really highlight the WHY to what we do. Our team’s goal is to provide foundational skills and lessons to help pave your own personalized path, no matter the adventures ahead. Grateful for each person who showed up and had fun, shout out to our amazing guide team, Sammy Rubin and Tailer Spinney, and shout out to our Program Manager and Lead Rock Guide Jo - Jessica Olson for helping out and capturing all of these moments. We are forever grateful to our team for making these events come together, to our parent company Golden State Guiding and to our Brand Partners - Tera Kaia, Weston and Rab for helping us create access for each person to show up and be set up for success.
